Ingredients
- 1 Shortcrust pastry (pie crust)
- 1.5 cups Golden syrup (or maple syrup)
- 1.5 cups Fresh breadcrumbs
- 1 Lemon
- 2 tbsp Butter
- 1 cup Clotted cream (or cream cheese)
Steps
- Line a tart tin with the pastry and chill. Golden syrup is the soul of this tart — dark treacle makes a different, heavier dessert.
- Warm the syrup gently and stir in the breadcrumbs, lemon zest and juice, and melted butter. The breadcrumbs absorb the syrup and set into a chewy, caramel filling.
- Pour into the pastry shell and bake at 375°F for 25 to 30 minutes until the filling is set and golden at the edges.
- Cool 20 minutes before slicing — the filling firms as it cools.
- Serve warm with clotted cream or custard. Harry Potter’s favorite dessert, and the rare fictional food endorsement that’s entirely justified.
