Ingredients

Steps

  1. Form two wide, thin 6-oz patties — the Whataburger patty is a five-inch blanket of beef, thin enough to get lacy edges.
  2. Sear in a dry, hot cast iron for 3 minutes; flip, cheese, and give it 2 more minutes.
  3. Toast the big buns until just golden; a Whataburger bun should bend, not crunch.
  4. Mustard goes on both halves — at Whataburger, mustard is the house sauce, and it goes on heavy.
  5. Pickles, diced onion, lettuce, and tomato on the heel, patty over the top so the produce stays cool and crisp.
  6. Wrap in paper for a minute before eating; the steam marries the mustard into the cheese.
