Ingredients
- 900 g Green cabbage
- 1.5 lb Ground beef and pork mix
- 1 cup Cooked rice
- 1 Yellow onion
- 1 Egg
- 6 slices Bacon
- 2 cups Crushed tomatoes
- 2 cups Beef broth
Steps
- Blanch the whole cabbage 5 minutes, then peel off 12 large leaves. Trim the thick center rib of each leaf flat so they roll without cracking.
- Mix the meat with the rice, diced onion, egg, salt, and pepper. Spoon a portion onto each leaf, fold in the sides, and roll snugly. Secure with toothpicks if needed.
- Line a Dutch oven with the chopped bacon, arrange the rolls seam-side down, and pour over the tomatoes and broth. The liquid should come halfway up the rolls.
- Braise covered at 350°F for 60 minutes, then uncover for 15 minutes so the tops brown.
- Serve with mashed potatoes to catch the tomato-bacon braising liquid. These reheat beautifully — arguably better on day two.
