Smoked Kippers
This is the kind of British breakfast you’ll make on repeat — kippers and butter, 15 minutes, big payoff. At 320 calories and 34g protein per serving, it fits easily into a high-protein day. Leftovers keep well, so it doubles as next-day lunch without any extra work.

Ingredients
- 4 Kippers
- 2 tbsp Butter
- 1 Lemon
- 4 slices Brown bread
- 0.25 tsp Cayenne pepper
Steps
- Kippers are herring, split, salted, and cold-smoked — intensely savory and unapologetically fishy. This is not a breakfast for the timid.
- Warm them gently: either grill 4 minutes per side or pour boiling water over them in a jug and steep 5 minutes. Never boil kippers — it toughens them.
- Dot with butter while hot so it melts into the flesh, and squeeze lemon over.
- Serve on hot buttered brown bread with a dusting of cayenne.
- Eat with strong tea and the morning paper. Watch for the fine bones — kippers demand your full attention, which is arguably the point.
